A message from
Speaker Tim Moore, North Carolina
Southern Legislative Conference Chair, 2019-2020
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
In the Southern Legislative Conference, our mission – and integral role – is to bring expertise, balance and informed debate to the state-level discussion of policy options. Our convening power, the largest within The Council of State Governments, has enabled us to bring together diverse voices from our region, helping to clarify differences and find common ground to shared challenges. Our long history of successful meetings, relevant research and programs directed toward this end is a testament to the strength and vitality of the SLC, as well as that of the Southern region.
The cancellation of our 73rd SLC Annual Meeting due to the predicted course and strength of Hurricane Barry revealed how often unpredictable challenges arise during our public service and reminded me how valuable the SLC and its mission are for us as policymakers.
As Chair of the Southern Legislative Conference, and host of our 74th SLC Annual Meeting, August 1 – 5, 2020, in Winston-Salem, I am excited to showcase our host city and state as we convene, once again, the premier public policy forum of Southern state legislatures.
I look forward to a productive year as Chair, as we continue to provide vital services and programs to our legislative members and staff – through state capitol visits, leadership development at both the member and staff levels, staff exchange programs on policy and process issues, domestic and international delegation study tours, and policy fly-ins – all with the goal of building a stronger region.
I look forward to seeing you in Winston-Salem!
Speaker Tim Moore
SLC Chair, 2019 – 2020
