A delegation of state transportation leaders from eight Southern states, led by Senator Keith M. Ingram, the 2013/2014 chair of The Council of State Governments’ (CSG) Southern Office, the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC), recently traveled to Panama for high level briefings on the Panama Canal expansion project. The delegation agenda was designed to reinforce the need for Southern ports to continue essential infrastructure enhancements to accommodate the significantly larger vessels and expanded cargo volumes expected to arrive after the completion of the Panama Canal expansion. The State & Local Legal Center will host a complimentary Supreme Court Preview Webinar at 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing numerous cases of interest to state and local government during its October Term 2013 involving issues such as prayer at a town board meeting, banning affirmative action at public universities, and buffer-zones surrounding reproductive health clinics. The Southern Legislative Conference has begun accepting applications for the 2013 Center for the Advancement of Leadership Skills (CALS) program. The program provides leadership development in the areas of communication, conflict resolution, consensus building and critical decision making for current and emerging leaders to better prepare them for increased leadership responsibilities.
